You Can’t Sharpen Strategic Skills In Isolation

When I started the Strategic Communicators Collective two years ago, I wasn’t trying to build another networking group.  I was trying to solve a problem I had experienced myself and saw existed for others.

As communications professionals advance in their careers, the conversations change. You stop looking for tactical advice and start wrestling with more complex questions:

  • How can I more effectively influence leadership decision-making?
  • How do I ensure we navigate this change in the best way possible?
  • How do I show my clients that I can help them with more than media relations?

Senior communicators don’t always have peers in their organizations who truly understand what they’re navigating. We’re expected to advise leadership, manage crises, shape strategy, and help others communicate through change — and we often do so in isolation.

That’s not something most of us can solve with another webinar or LinkedIn post. It requires honest conversation with people who understand the work because they’ve lived it too.

This is why I created the Strategic Communicators Collective. I wanted to have a space for purpose-driven communicators to challenge one another’s thinking, exchange ideas freely, and sharpen their role as strategists.

During this month’s meet-up, what started as a conversation about environmental scanning quickly evolved into an engaging discussion about the implications of using AI in communications.

I sensed that it was really important to make that pivot, so I did.

What emerged was a great exchange of ideas that challenged thinking, offered different perspectives, surfaced more difficult questions, and led to the recommendation of specific tools. No one tried to prove they had all the answers. And everyone was there to learn, grow, and share.

The Strategic Communicators Collective was never intended to be just another professional development program. It was designed as a place for mid-to-senior-level PR, marketing, and fund development professionals who are ready to move beyond execution and strengthen their role as trusted strategic advisors.

After two years of leading the group, I know that the hunger for meaningful community among purpose-driven professionals who want to become indispensable strategists for their organizations or clients is still very present. The insight and generosity of our founding members have been invaluable, and I’m more excited than ever about where we’re headed.

Registration for the 2026-2027 cohort opens August 10, 2026.

If you’ve been looking for a space to challenge your thinking, sharpen your strategic communications skills, and connect with peers who understand this work, I’d love for you to be a part of what’s next.

I hope you’ll join us.
