How I Got Over Myself And Invested In Professional Development

I’m a strong believer in the power of professional development. For years I held out on investing in myself because I was “too busy” or worried I wouldn’t connect with the people in the group. I’m glad I got over myself.

During the past two years, I have invested in an online course creation program, a PR business coach, an improv workshop, speaker training, and a business mastermind. I’ve taken something wonderful and valuable from all of them. I’m convinced that one of the best ways to stay sharp and grow your business is to connect with really smart people looking for the same thing.

I learn just as much from listening to the challenges and successes of others as I do when it’s my turn in the “hot seat.” While it can be initially uncomfortable and a little scary to lay it all out there, I know transformation is on the other side of that fear. And as I see the growth in my work, confidence, and revenue, I find myself welcoming those moments much more.

Being a lifelong learner is a key to success, and whether you’re entering a new industry or leaving the corporate world to start your own business — a mastermind or some form of professional development that lights you up should be at the top of your list.

The alumni group that formed from my five-week corporate messaging program is one of the most satisfying (and coincidental!) outcomes of my passion for mentoring and training communications professionals. The fact that they’ve learned how to facilitate these premium sessions and are making more money doing it was satisfying enough for me, but the mastermind is the icing on the cake.  It’s evolved into this delicious mix of business advice, professional growth, and personal support. I learn something new every time we meet!
