The idea that those who strive for excellence are in fact fearful of achieving their dreams seems contradictory, but I know I’ve had moments of “holy crap!” when I, at long last, reach a goal I’ve worked hard to attain. The way I manage the fear is to actually sit in the moment and celebrate the success, express gratitude, take a deep breath, and then get to work. It’s taken years of experience, successes, setbacks, and a couple of really wise mentors to get to this level of self-awareness. Confidence builds over time and we must continuously nurture it and love on it by surrounding ourselves with people who honor and support us.
One of the most surprising aspects of my work training communicators in my corporate messaging program was the realization that while they were certainly keen to learn how to do the research, prepare for and facilitate the workshop, they had an equal or greater desire to cultivate the unshakeable self-trust needed to get buy-in from senior leaders. And that by helping them gain new skills and expertise, sharing my own experiences and successes, I was also helping them build that confidence.
I’ve learned for myself that charging appropriately for my services is as much about mindset as it is the rockstar framework I already know transforms the way organizations communicate. So, I pay it forward in my program. We talk about self-care and communicating effectively with senior leaders on day one, in the very first module.
