I remember being so frustrated with my title 20 years ago.
I tried to explain to my boss that “Media Relations Manager” just wasn’t the right label for the public relations work I was doing managing multiple relationships with staff across all roles and levels in four different business units on a global scale. Add media relations, government affairs, investor relations and more to the mix and you will understand my pain. It wasn’t accurate and I felt so boxed in.
I’ve never liked boxes.
The amplified role I had in my early days of PR had a direct relation to the way leaders viewed me and the value I brought. Wearing multiple hats taught me the true meaning of strategy. It also enhanced my love for our profession.
That’s why I’m always advocating for PR professionals like you to develop the skills and knowledge to become the strategic advisors organizations need.
It’s time to stop seeing PR as just media relations.
It’s about:
✅ Becoming the trusted advisor who scans the environment, identifies opportunities, and anticipates challenges before they arise.
✅ Mastering the planning and messaging frameworks that drive real impact (the same ones I teach in my programs).
✅ Breaking out of the outdated “PR = media” mindset and embracing the full power of strategic communications.
The truth? Public relations has always been more than media placements—but today, the demand for strategic PR leadership is greater than ever.
Shifts in the media landscape, AI-driven content, and the evolving nature of trust in brands all signal that our role must be bigger, broader, and bolder.
If you’ve been feeling the itch to step into a more strategic role—if you know you’re ready for more but aren’t sure where to start—I want to help.
